Annick Press was founded in 1975 by
Anne W. Millyard and Rick Wilks with a mandate to publish quality
children's literature by Canadian authors. Between 1975 and 1983
we published only a handful of titles each year (between three
and six). We rarely broke even on a book, though our titles were
consistently well-reviewed. Over the past twelve years we have
published between twenty-one and thirty-five titles annually. In
total, we now have 291 books in print.
We specialize in full-colour picture books which we publish in
English, though each year we are also publishing more and more of
our list in French. Our programme also includes a line of
successful pre-teen novels, mini-books (ANNIKINS), a line of
non-fiction titles, and some Spanish, Japanese and
Chinese-language publishing.
We believe that a successful
children's book is one that feels authentic, that makes the child
belong, poses questions, opens doors, encourages discussion,
causes laughter and tears, and invites a sharing of emotions. It
is also a book that allows the imagination to touch the sky.
We feel very strongly that our editorial success, and whatever
financial well-being we have enjoyed, are due to the fact we
remain true to our editorial philosophy. We are an owner-managed
company that places the highest premium on delivering quality
publications that reflect the world of the child, and our titles
are available at prices that are as reasonable as possible.
