Internet-based Video Gaining Respect PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 August 2007
Daniel Langendorf of Last 100 poses the question: "Is the Internet the fifth major TV network?"

Langendorf discusses online video dramas "LonelyGirl15" and "Prom Queen." The latter, he points out, "garnered nearly 15 million total views and generated substantial interactive response."

According to Jane Hu of the Tornante Company, "Prom Queen" induced 14,000 comments and over 21,000 forum postings. The Tornante Company was founded in 2005 by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, and launched a new media studio in March 2007 to produce "world-class content" for the Internet.

Earlier this year, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences created a collection of Broadband Emmy awards. NATAS even launched a MySpace promotion to to reach out to user-generated video producers.

Wednesday, 01 August 2007
The Community Book Center, the only African-American-centered bookstore to reopen in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina, recently unveiled plans to launch a "business/training" center.

Scheduled to open next month, the training center will offer business owners access to office equipment such as computers and fax machines, as well as training in business development. The owner, Vera Warren-Williams, is also currently constructing a conference room addition to the bookstore and plans to add a coffee shop in the near future.

Patrons of the training center will be charged on a sliding scale.

New Book: The Price of Liberty PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 21 July 2007
AuthorViews is pleased to be able to offer a timely OpEd article by Robert D. Hormats based on his new book, The Price of Liberty: Paying for America’s Wars. As the U.S. Congress continues to debate and vote on funding the War in Iraq, Hormats' book provides insights that can lead to a more intelligent use of taxpayer dollars.

In The Price of Liberty, Hormats examines fiscal decisions made in American wars, beginning with the Revolution and working up to the current War on Terrorism. Successful wartime Treasury Secretaries -- from the War of 1812, through the Civil War, and into World War I -- all studied the techniques of their predecessors, and Hormats provides a clear evaluation of their effectiveness.

Hormats is Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs (International). He also served as Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative from 1979 to 1981, and Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs at the Department of State from 1977 to 1979. He served as a Senior Staff Member for International Economic Affairs on the National Security Council from 1969 to 1977, where he was Senior Economic Advisor to Dr. Henry Kissinger, General Brent Scowcroft, and Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski.

The OpEd we are offering originally appeared in The Washington Post and discusses the present war funding debate in Congress. We're thankful to the Post for allowing us to reprint it here.

In Memory of Jan Nathan, Executive Director of PMA PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 July 2007
My colleague and friend, Jan Nathan, succumbed to a prolonged battle with cancer and died June 17, 2007, at the age of 68, surrounded by loved ones.

Jan Nathan was the executive director of PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association, formerly known as Publishers Marketing Association. She tirelessly mentored thousands of book publishers. The impact of her work on the fortunes of publishers and, through them, the discourse of America is profound.

PMA president Florrie Binford Kichler, along with former PMA board member, Alice Acheson, prepared this news release to inform the organization's 4200 members of Jan's departure.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jan for the vital industry newsletter she published for nearly 20 years, the PMA Independent. Here is a reprint of that profile from 2003.

Jan Nathan, rest in peace -- yes, you really can -- you earned it!

New Video: Chuck Panozzo and The Grand Illusion PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 June 2007
At Book Expo America in New York last month, I was pleased to see dozens of old rockers and new fans in a long line waiting for Chuck Panozzo to autograph his book, The Grand Illusion, an autobiography of this bass player for the band, Styx.

AuthorViews got a chance to meet Chuck Panozzo and interview him privately at the Bywater Tech Center during Carnival. Styx was in town to perform after the Endymion parade at the annual krewe's ball, held in the now-infamous SuperDome.

In this candid, 2-minute interview, Chuck shares what it was like growing up "different," and how he kept a secret for years in an attempt to spare his parents, band members, and fans. It's a moving clip.
