LEE & GRANT:
Profiles in Leadership
from the Battlefields of Virginia by Maj. Charles R. Bowery, Jr., U.S. Army
LEE & GRANT combines a riveting historical account of
the Overland Campaign with a fascinating, eye-opening study in leadership
-- as powerful and relevant today as it was on the battlefields of Virginia.
Stripping away many of the myths and hyperbole, LEE & GRANT delivers
a clear-headed account of their successes and failures, along with dozens
of leadership lessons that managers and executives can put to use in
any organization.
Lee and Grant approached challenges in a fundamentally similar way.
They called on skills learned through a lifetime of intellectual and
practical preparation, applied those skills through carefully selected
subordinates, and drove their armies forward with indomitable will and
persistence. Imagine an organization headed by someone who combines the
best traits and skills of these two exceptional generals -- unstoppable!
"In Lee & Grant, Charles Bowery offers
some timely, perceptive, and deftly presented observations on nineteenth
century leadership and followership skills that apply equally well
to managers, military and civilian, of our era. This well-researched
and thought-provoking study is a model of its kind." -- Edward G. Longacre
"Lee & Grant offers a judicious and compelling
command- level overview of the 1864 Overland Campaign, as well as thoughtful
consideration of how an understanding of the events of over 140 years
ago can be of value to businessmen, military officers, and anyone else
who faces the challenge of leadership today. Highly recommended." -- Ethan S. Rafuse, Professor of Military History,
U.S. Army Command and General Staff College,
and author of George Gordon Meade and the War in the East
"Charles Bowery's book is a remarkably interesting
and useful analysis of the challenges Grant and Lee faced as leaders.
Bowery identifies the qualities, skills, and methods that enabled them
to succeed, and he skillfully translates their experiences into 'Leadership
Lessons,' readily transferable to the modern business world." -- Robert A. Doughty, U.S. Military Academy, West Point
Business is a Battlefield.
Learn from Two of America's Greatest Generals.
The Overland Campaign of 1864 brought together the
Civil War's two greatest commanders, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant,
in the longest, hardest-fought, and most destructive military campaign
ever waged on the North American continent. Locked in deadly combat,
Lee and Grant plotted, maneuvered, and pushed ferociously to win control
of each conflic the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, the North
Anna, Cold Harbor and, ultimately, the nation.
The Bush Betrayal by James Bovard
Published by Palgrave Macmillan
His hard-hitting critiques of Democrat and Republican
administrations in The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Newsweek,
and other national publications have made him a "bipartisan scourge." Now,
James Bovard launches a blistering attack on the Bush administration
that will add new fuel to the fires of Bush opponents while giving presidential
supporters much to think about. In a series of cogently argued allegations,
Bovard shows how the campaign promises of 2000 have betrayed not only
the electorate, but the Constitution itself: from the erosion of civil
liberties, massive debt, and the arrogance of federal agencies, to economic
policies that favor the wealthy, and the deceptive maneuvers that led
to war in Iraq and the alienation of former allies. For every American,
The Bush Betrayal will be required reading in this election year.
TERRORISM AND TYRANNY:
Trampling Freedom, Justice and Peace
to Rid the World of Evil by James Bovard
Published by Palgrave Macmillan
"The war on terrorism is the first political growth
industry of the new Millennium." So begins Jim Bovard's newest and,
in some ways, most provocative book as he casts yet another jaundiced
eye on Washington and the motives behind protecting "the homeland" and
prosecuting a wildly unpopular war with Iraq. For James Bovard, as always,
it all comes down to a trampling of personal liberty and an end to privacy
as we know it. From airport security follies that protect no one to increased
surveillance of individuals and skyrocketing numbers of detainees, the
war on terrorism is taking a toll on individual liberty and no one tells
the whole grisly story better than Bovard.
"Terrorism and Tyranny is a scathing account of
the war on terrorism...Bovard is a bipartisan scourge...His lively fury
at government incompetence keeps the pages turning quickly...Most riveting." --
Edmund Carlevale, The Boston Globe
"[Bovard] has synthesized and organized a vast amount of information,
yet he presents it in an acessible, reader-friendly way.... A timely,
troubling book, exhaustively and impeccably researched and documented....
an important, indeed essential, guide to the complex issues with which
we must now grapple." -- Martin Sieff, The Washington Times
"No one is spared in Bovard's merciless review of our spectacularly
unsuccessful war on terrorism."--Justin Raimondo, The American Conservative
"Invaluable....the
best one-stop source I've seen for what various officials actually
said at various times, suffused with intelligent
analysis." --Alan Bock, Orange County Register
"...a concise and accurate chronicle of what happened and what
could happen to our freedom as a result of excessive federal government
power."-Jim Grichar, LewRockwell.com
"If you want to know what is really going on in President Bush's
War on Terror, read Terrorism and Tyranny."--Charley Reese online
"Meticulously documented from contemporary news accounts, this
rant against Bush's 'aura of righteousness' may well leave readers as
angry as its author."--Publishers Weekly
"Bovard's
take is ... a far more detailed and wide-ranging assault on the Patriot
Act and the Bush administration, dense with example after example of
governmental oppression, folly, and ineptitude in the wake of 9/11.
Bovard is a superb reporter.... He has apparently read just about everything
cf0published, in both the traditional and alternative media, about the
egregious conduct of government officials, investigators, airport screeners,
and bureaucrats everywhere in the last two years . His parade of horribles
is sourced with exceptional attention to detail [in 67 pages of fine-print
footnotes]...
Bovard offers far more than an infuriating record of government misconduct.
His is a libertarian critique of any government's-including ours-inherent
tendency to aggrandize and abuse its power." -- Michael Stern, The
American Lawyer

About the Book EMPIRE OF DEBT:
The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis
by Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin
Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
ISBN 0-471-73902-2, hardcover, $27.95
Available through this site or directly from the publisher: http://www.wiley.com
"This is a powerful book. In addition to its depth, it is
well written, well documented, and vastly readable. I had
the feeling of seeing an X-ray of economic reality with the
crust removed. It should be made mandatory reading in most
circles. Read it; and your views of the world around you
will no longer be the same."
-- Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Founder, Empirica Capital, LLC
Author, Fooled by Randomness
"Now perhaps someone will finally listen!" -- Jim Rogers, author, Investment Biker, Adventure Capitalist, and Hot Commodities
"Instead of trade and work, imperialism breeds militarism,
inflation, and debt, as Bonner and Wiggin show. Yet there
is a golden hope in freedom and honest money." -- Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr., President, Ludwig von Mises Institute
"[Empire of Debt] is a fantastic book. It's thoughtful,
erudite, witty, well written, practical . . . and spot-on.
If you value your financial health, you'll read it from
cover to cover. Now!" -- Doug Casey, Chairman, Casey Research, LLC
author, Crisis Investing
"I laughed, I cried, I renewed my passport. . . . Bonner
and Wiggin deliver a steady diet of insight and wit that
terrifies the reader, even as it amuses. Empire of Debt is
not for everyone, only for those of us who hope to enjoy
continuing prosperity amidst difficult conditions." -- Eric Fry, Editor, The Rude Awakening
In no-nonsense prose, Empire of Debt confronts critical
concerns about the position of the United States as the
world's leading economy and great military might. For many
years, the United States has been the country from which
others sought advice, money, and a high return on
investment. At the same time, Uncle Sam has descended from
being the world's largest creditor to its greatest debtor.
Why the paradox?
The team that conceived the international bestseller
Financial Reckoning Day offers the first in-depth look at
how Americans abandoned sound traditions of economic
freedom, personal liberty, and fiscal restraint, favoring
instead government control of the economy, unfettered
deficit spending, gluttonous consumption, and fearless
military adventurism, all of which have ravaged the
business environment, devastated personal balance sheets,
and led the global economy to the brink of financial
crisis. The authors argue there will be a dramatic change
in the economic power of the United States in the coming
years that will inevitably impact every American.
Understanding this is critical for everyone, from lawmakers
and corporate leaders to investors seeking safe places to
invest retirement funds. Despite the serious topic, the
authors' irreverent style entertains as they find humor in
a precarious financial situation.
CONTINUUM by Marlys Beider
Published by Hats Off Books
The terrorist group Al-Saafi is about to unleash its newly developed
weapon of mass destruction. Soon the devastating MAX 18 virus will rid
the world of infidels, beginning with the president of the United States
and his cabinet.
Two beautiful and extraordinary women, born only minutes apart at opposite
ends of the country, share a spiritual ancestry that extends well beyond
mere psychic power. Together they have less than nine months to follow
a trail of secrets and unthinkable deeds to keep mankind's future intact.
This heart-pounding story explodes with corruption and deceit, goodness
and love. Through a brilliant blend of intriguing characters and a fast-paced
plot, CONTINUUM makes you wonder if indeed there are those
among us who have been given the awesome responsibility of saving the
world from a violent end.
"German-born Beider is a writer
to watch, as this is only her second novel. CONTINUUM is
a wild and exciting ride, and a treat for readers who enjoy suspense,
thrills and a tasty touch of the supernatural to top it all off."
-- Marie Jones, BookIdeas.com
"CONTINUUM is
a marvelous pastiche which combines the suspense of a down to Earth
spy novel with an ethereal spiritual cosmology. The passages describing
the realm of spirit are transcendent while the passages describing
the evil logic of modern day bio-terrorists are all too disturbingly
earthy and real."
-- Harry Arader, The Centromere Group
"From the novel's first page
to its last, CONTINUUM's
riveting subject matter and interesting characters grab the reader's
attention in a surrealistic fashion. The mysticism and medical details
realistically interweave the stories within a story, holding the reader
captive to the end."

RESTORING THE LOST CONSTITUTION:
The Presumption of Liberty by Randy E. Barnett
Published by Princeton University Press
The U.S. Constitution found in school textbooks and
under glass in Washington is not the one enforced today by the Supreme
Court. In Restoring the Lost Constitution, Randy Barnett argues that
since the nation's founding, but especially since the 1930s, the courts
have been cutting holes in the original Constitution and its amendments
to eliminate the parts that protect liberty from the power of government.
From the Commerce Clause, to the Necessary and Proper Clause, to the
Ninth and Tenth Amendments, to the Privileges or Immunities Clause of
the Fourteenth Amendment, the Supreme Court has rendered each of these
provisions toothless. In the process, the written Constitution has been
lost.
Barnett establishes the original
meaning of these lost clauses and offers a practical way to restore
them to their central role in constraining government: adopting a "presumption of liberty" to
give the benefit of the doubt to citizens when laws restrict their
rightful exercises of liberty. He also provides a new, realistic and
philosophically rigorous theory of constitutional legitimacy that justifies
both interpreting the Constitution according to its original meaning
and, where that meaning is vague or open-ended, construing it so as
to better protect the rights retained by the people.
As clearly argued as it is insightful and provocative, Restoring the
Lost Constitution forcefully disputes the conventional wisdom, posing
a powerful challenge to which others must now respond.

NANOCOSM:
Nanotechnology and the Big Changes coming fromthe Inconceivably Small by William Illsey Atkinson
Published by Amacom Books
Since the beginning of the industrial age, most machines have grown
steadily smaller, more powerful, and more complex. Now nanotechnology,
based on the science of the infinitesimally small, takes technology beyond
most popular definitions of reality, to a realm of molecular machines,
cell-sized computers, and other astounding possibilities.
NANOCOSM is like a debriefing of the major players in nanotechnology
-- scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, venture capitalists, and government
officials. Atkinson probes for their best ideas, converts the answers to
common English, then tabulates the results. His quest for the biggest concepts
in super-miniature technology leads him all over the globe, from Tsukuba,
Japan -- home to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science
and Technology -- to the Nanotech Planet conference in San Jose, California
-- with contributions from Canada, Brussels, Switzerland, Australia, the
U.K., New York, and North Carolina.
In NANOCOSM, Atkinson reveals a spectacular view of the immediate
future of nanotechnology and its applications in:
Medicine -- precision-delivery drugs that assemble themselves and
have minimal side effects
Computing -- quantum processors triggered by a single particle of light
Engineering -- megastructures made of hollow nanotubes boasting exceptional
strength and stability
And countless other inventions that will redefine how we work, play,
and live.
As with any phenomenon, nanotechnology
has both its naysayers and its zealots, by turns clouding scientific
truth with dismissals, prophecies, and pipe dreams. But nanotech is real:
The U.S. President recently announced a $500 million National Nanotechnology
Initiative, and "Business Week" named
nanotechnology one of the Ten Technologies That Will Change Our Lives. NANOCOSM shows
why.
In describing his journey, Atkinson brings personality and voice
to the hype that surrounds nanotechnology, and successfully makes it
approachable for both the hardened scientist and the inquisitive lay
person. -- Randall C. Willis, Senior Associate Editor, Today's Chemist at Work (American Chemical Society)
...clearly written, lucidly explained, humorous, and even whimsical
book. -- Richard Worzel, Futurist,
author of The Next 20 Years of Your Life
Nanocosm is the nanotechnology book we have all been waiting
for: accurate, realistic and oh so readable. -- F. Mark Modzelewski, Executive Director,
NanoBusiness Alliance
...a scientific travelogue that describes the new nano-frontier in
clear everyday language. -- Dr. David Akin, Business and Technology Correspondent,
CTV News, Toronto

"This is a groundbreaking book by Blakemore and Ramirez...
If any book were to have all the answers for discovering
language with your little one, this would be it; highly
recommended for all public libraries." -- Library Journal (starred review)
"If I were in charge of American parents, my first law
would be that all new parents had to read (or listen to)
this book. It's not only soundly researched, but also filled
with practical strategies that any parent can use." -- Jim Trelease, author of the million-copy bestseller, The Read-Aloud Handbook
Introducing your child to a lifelong love of reading can be
as easy as A-B-C... if you know the right techniques.
Decades of research have proven the value of reading aloud
to children, and the years between birth and age two are
arguably the most crucial for language development. As a
parent, it's important that you help your baby acquire the
foundation they need to speak earlier, read on their own
sooner, and benefit from an increased vocabulary and
attention span.
Baby Read-Aloud Basics shows you how to establish an
effective daily read-aloud routine to take charge of your
baby's future understanding and success. Organized around
the six stages of early language development from birth to
age two, the book provides simple but effective techniques
to help you:
Make reading aloud an interactive experience -- from
intonation and speech patterns to gesture.
Select what to read aloud by looking at how much the text
of the book repeats, whether it rhymes, and the types of
interactive elements it incorporates.
Know when to read and how often in order to create a
reading routine that's both enjoyable and effective.
Ensure your baby gets the right amount of language from a
nanny or a caretaker.
Effectively incorporate reading in a bilingual home.
Filled with step-by-step instructions, scripted
demonstrations, and an extensive list of recommended
titles, Baby Read-Aloud Basics gives you all the guidance
and information you need to instill a lifelong love of
reading and learning, and start your baby along on the road
to success.
