About the Author

Ruth Hoppin is a contributor to the InterVarsity Press Women's Bible Commentary and the Feminist Companion to the Catholic Epistles and Hebrews (T&T Clark, Co., Ltd.). She has written for journals, and has presented papers at regional meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature. Her articles have been published in India in English and Marathi.

As an independent researcher, Ruth has written and lectured on scripture pertaining to the status of women. For many years her focus has been on Priscilla as author of the Epistle to the Hebrews. She also writes about contemplative prayer -- both prose and poetry.

About the Book

Why was the Name of the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews lost so early in its history? Tracking down every clue, and developing a convincing line of reasoning, Ruth Hoppin contends that Priscilla -- a woman who was a leader in the early church and an associate of Paul -- is ultimately the only "suspect" who meets all the qualifications for authorship.

Originally published in 1997, Priscilla's Letter: Finding the Author of the Epistle to the Hebrews was secretly taken out of print after only a few months of availability. Circumstances suggest deliberate suppression, due to the influence of religious extremists who regard the concept of female authorship of the epistle intolerable. Recognition of Priscilla's claim will advance the social and religious status of all women.
